Governance, decision making and peer review.

BBSRC funds research in many different ways and as the main UK public funder of non-clinical biosciences, we recognise that diversity is essential for excellence and increases our capacity to research, innovate and grow.

We are committed to ensuring that the best researchers from a diverse population are attracted into research careers and supporting these careers. We will ensure our funding mechanisms and processes do not present any potential barriers and bias to funding and ensure that people who are engaged with the processes, operate these fairly and without prejudice or bias.

We will be transparent and accountable to whom and how we fund research. We annually publish the diversity data for applications to, and membership of, our key decision making fora and will continue our work to achieve diversity in the membership of BBSRC Council, Strategy Advisory Panels and Research Committees.

An analysis of the applicants who submitted an Expression of Interest to the 2015 and 2016 calls for Appointments, which we will use as a baseline for understanding the current diversity of applicants

Further analysis of the diversity of people applying, recommended and appointed to BBSRC’s Committees and Panels. This will allow us to identify if there is anything within the appointments process itself that is causing the diversity of appointees to be significantly different from that of the applicants.

Further to this, we have analysed the diversity of the Pool of Experts and considered whether any interventions made in 2016 have affected the diversity of the applicants to the Pool. This analysis was presented to BBSRC’s Appointments Board in April 2017 for consideration.
