Future directions in research relating to food security

May 2009

In May BBSRC led a consultation on behalf of the Research Councils on future research for food security.

The world faces a growing food security crisis due to a combination of factors including:

  • Growing population
  • Climate change threatening global harvests
  • Exotic and endemic animal disease
  • Global economic downturn disrupting the flow of trade

Research is essential in meeting the challenges ahead.

Leading scientists, policy makers, funders, farmers, food manufacturers and retailers met at a workshop in February 2009. They identified challenges to delivering sustainable food security and the science we need to meet them.

From this we developed a consultation document seeking views on future research needs, and how to overcome barriers to delivery.

Further developments

BBSRC is a partner in the multi-agency Global Food Security programme (see external links). Its Strategic Plan 2011-2016 was developed taking into account the responses to the consultation, as well as other sources of advice and information.
