Mathematical biology is essential to underpin and inform modern biosciences. BBSRC sets out in the Ten-Year Vision the view that we are moving 'towards predictive biology'. The BBSRC-sponsored institutes have a key role to play in developing and integrating mathematical techniques to support key areas of research such as sustainable agriculture, and in developing innovative approaches through mathematical models of entire cells, tissues organs and organisms.

The review is based on written submission from each institute, site visits, meetings with institute Directors, and visiting group reports from the Institute Assessment Exercises in 2001 and 2005.

Following presentation of the report to Council in November 2006, it was agreed that Institute Directors should prepare an Action Plan to show how their institute will implement the recommendations of the report, to be submitted in June 2007.
