Vaccines represent a highly cost effective intervention for disease prevention and eradication, and are an important tool in the fight against both infectious and zoonotic diseases. Vaccination enhances animal welfare both safeguarding public health and sustainably improving livestock production to meet global food security challenges.
The strategy sets out how to deliver key drivers, opportunities and challenges for delivering impact from our existing and future investments in world-class vaccinology research. The main focus for the strategy is on animals (including fish) farmed for food production in the UK, but the strategy is also relevant to other domesticated animals of importance to the UK economy.
The strategy was informed by a global veterinary vaccinology survey commissioned by BBSRC. The findings of the survey are detailed and addressed in this report – documenting the opportunities and risks the research base.
