It is important to ensure that all forms of communication with employees are fit for purpose and recognise the needs of those who may have special requirements, e.g. those with a visual or hearing impairment or for whom English may not be their first language.
Information exchange is achieved in a number of different ways, including:
- meetings, seminars and presentations
- bulletins and newsletters
- interactions with your line management
- contact with your HR department (who may also provide information on notice boards and internet sites etc)
- Advice provided by the RCUK SBS Ltd (where applicable)
- letters, memos or e-mails directly to you in certain circumstances
- information from local and national Trades Unions consultation and negotiation mechanisms

2. Consultation and negotiation with Trades Unions
BBSRC consults and negotiates with recognised Trades Unions at both local and national levels. The following unions are recognised for collective bargaining purposes within the BBSRC:
- PCS (Public and Commercial Services Union)
This list of recognised unions does not preclude other unions being recognised locally as NCC members, or for representing individual members.
The principles behind BBSRC’s consultation and negotiation with Trades Unions are described as follows:
- The facilities agreement (appendix A4.1)
- The model constitution for the local Negotiating and Consultative Committee (NCC) or office equivalent (appendix A4.2)
- The constitution for the Joint Negotiating and Consultative Committee (JNCC) and General Purpose Committee (GPC) (appendix A4.3)
- The right to access to the Chief Executive and attendance of additional members of the TUS at JNCC meetings (appendix A4.4)
