Rainbow Seed Fund
We are a core partner in the Rainbow Seed Fund which is an important part of our portfolio of commercialisation support. The fund provides kick-starting finance to technology start-ups that spin-out of publically-funded research institutes, are based on a partner's campuses or are involved in very early stage commercialisation of synthetic biology.
Rainbow helps companies in the early stage of their development with the aim of achieving sustainability through investment, strategic support and leverage. It aims to make a financial return and assumes risk by investing at an early stage but has a wider role in the commercialisation portfolio of BBSRC and the other partners in enabling impact for economic and public benefit.
The fund has invested in over 40 companies and projects ranging from biotechnology to advanced optics. The Rainbow Seed Fund was established in 2002 by a group of public sector research establishments and is managed by Midven Ltd. Since 2002, the fund has delivered a strong return on investment, with a Gross Value Added to cost ratio of 5:1.
