LEAF Open Farm Sunday call for science activity resources

Funding total

£17,000 was available to develop 5-10 agricultural science activities.

Projects funded

  • Improving soil to improve our food – Professor Duncan Cameron, The University of Sheffield
    A root-viewing based activity to highlight to a family audience the importance of maintaining healthy soil for our crops and livestock
  • Where’s the science in that? – Dr Simon Griffiths, John Innes Centre
    An activity to encourage visitors to learn about the science involved in the arable year
  • Cute eggs – Dr Ian Dunn, The Roslin Institute
    An activity to communicate the importance of the invisible protein cuticle that surrounds an egg in protecting it from harmful bacteria

Purpose

To support the BBSRC research community to design and produce engaging farm-related bioscience activities, for use by farmers and/or visiting scientists, to engage, inspire and inform the general public at LEAF’s (Linking Environment And Farming) Open Farm Sunday and Open Farm School Days, across the UK.

Key aims

  • To design one or more farm focused science activity idea which must show good value for money, be on topic, understandable, and easily implemented by farmers who are engaging the public on their farms
