UK Veterinary Vaccinology Research Network

To fund a community Veterinary Vaccinology Research Network for a period of five years. The network is an important component of our Veterinary Vaccinology Programme. The attributes of the Network are:

  • Vision
    To foster a multi-disciplinary community to enhance the development and uptake of novel tools and technologies as well as address the "unmet" needs in protective immunity in the field of veterinary vacccinology
  • Mission
    To establish and sustain research partnerships that generates scientific knowledge and discovers the tools/technologies to develop next generation vaccines

Key aims

  • To facilitate sharing of existing knowledge by coordinating current research activities and the sharing of reagents and resources
  • To provide a focus for discussion on novel technologies/technology development and an immunology toolbox for the target veterinary species
  • To bring together experts to analyse gaps in capability and identify research priorities
  • To provide advice and annual update to BBSRC on the landscape and research gaps in the area
  • To facilitate new research collaborations and initiate collaborative bids for funding
  • To promote collaboration with the human vaccinology research community
  • To establish links with Industry
  • To provide a UK link to STAR-IDAZ/International groups
  • To develop a website and/or other social networking site as a focus for communication
  • To share knowledge of previous failures to maximise resources by eliminating unnecessary repetition and reducing animal usage.

Expected outputs

  • Networking through a range of activities (both virtual and real) directed at various levels (Senior Researchers, Post Doctorate and Post Graduate) including symposia and workshops
  • Landscape analysis of veterinary vaccinology in the UK
  • Identification of research gaps and future priorities
  • High impact multi-disciplinary proposals
  • Closer collaboration with Industry reflected in research applications
  • Effective links with international groups (e.g. through STAR-IDAZ)

  • Development of a strategic research agenda
  • Uptake of new tools/technologies in the field of veterinary vaccinology
  • Progress in the field of understanding protective immunity and developing determinants and biomarkers
  • Advancement of generic vaccinology approaches
  • Identification of potential novel vaccine candidates and vaccine approaches
  • Stimulation of a step change in vaccine development
  • Improved access to specialized tools and facilities
  • Increased integration of the human-veterinary vaccinology field (one Health approach)
  • Improved communication between non-profit sector and industry
