Strategic priorities

BBSRC has a set of Council-wide strategic priorities (research and policy) that are applicable to all aspects of our funding.

For further detail see ‘BBSRC priorities’ document in the Downloads section.

Research priorities

  • Ageing research: lifelong health and wellbeing
  • Bioenergy
  • Global security
  • Living with environmental change
  • Nanoscience through engineering to application: bionanotechnology
  • Systems approach to biological research
  • Synthetic biology
  • Technology development for bioscience
  • Animal health
  • Crop science (food security)

Policy priorities

  • Economic and social impact
  • Impact on public policy
  • Increased international collaboration
  • Replacement, refinement and reduction (3Rs) in research using animals
  • Welfare of managed animals (including livestock and companion animals)

These priorities will be active for 1-2 years and will be revised and refreshed annually by the Strategy Advisory Board. The board will receive input from the Strategy Panels, Research Committees and other stakeholders.

Occasionally BBSRC may wish to encourage applications in a particular area and will do this by issuing highlight notices, which will usually be applicable for a specified short period (e.g. 6 months). Highlight notices will be made available as they are announced.
