Masters training grants

We have stopped funding for this programme once the current awards end (see press release in related links)

Aim

To support postgraduate training at masters level in areas of strategic importance for UK biosciences.

Background

The last competition awarded studentship funding to support masters programmes between 2010 - 2012.

Priority areas

  • Interdisciplinary training
  • In vivo skills
  • Strategically important training for industry

Number of awards

Funding for 110 studentships per annum for 3 years was available. They were awarded in the form of single, flexible master’s training grants (MTGs) to cover 3 academic years of annual intake:

  • 2010/11
  • 2011/12
  • 2012/13

Rather than funding individual studentships, MTGs provided funding in the form of a single training grant. This gave the department considerable flexibility in how it choose to use the funding, subject to the terms and conditions of the grant. For example:

  • Ability to part-fund studentships with other sponsors
  • Joint funding of studentships with another Research Councils
  • Fund students on a part-time basis
  • Hold over funding from 1 year to the next if a student drops out or withdraws unexpectedly
  • Draw higher levels of funding for the course fee or consumables, and award fewer studentships instead
  • Award higher stipends to recruit the strongest students, and award fewer studentships instead
