DNA sequencing spin-out sells for $600M

Solexa, a spin-out company from the University of Cambridge, formed in 1998 and inspired from some basic research funded by BBSRC, was sold to US-based Illumina for $600M in January 2007.

The research by Dr Shankar Balasubramanian and Dr David Klenerman on DNA chemistry led to novel sequencing and detection systems which the scientists commercialised through Solexa.
