Interim Chief Executive at BBSRC appointed

Mr Steve Visscher has been appointed interim Chief Executive at the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).

Mr Visscher took over as Chief Executive of the Research Council on 1 September 2007 when Professor Julia Goodfellow stood down to take up her new role as Vice Chancellor at the University of Kent. Mr Visscher is Executive Director and Head of Finance at BBSRC.

The process to identify a new Chief Executive for BBSRC is underway and Mr Visscher will be in post until a successor to Professor Goodfellow is appointed.

Dr Peter Ringrose, Chairman of BBSRC Council, said: “In his current role as BBSRC Executive Director and during his many years of senior management with BBSRC Steve Visscher has demonstrated and thorough and in-depth understanding of BBSRC and its role. We could not ask for a better interim Chief Executive while the process to identify a successor to Julia Goodfellow is underway.”

Steve Visscher has extensive experience of the UK Research Councils. He has worked for BBSRC since 1994 and previously for predecessor Research Councils and associated institutes. His most recent role has been as Executive Director, with particular responsibility for funding policy, including the Research Councils UK project on reform of the Dual Support system, resource management, large capital projects and operations. His professional background is in finance and audit; he is Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and a Fellow of the Institute of Internal Auditors.

Steve is married with two children.
