Joint statement in response to "Face to Face: UK Chemistry-Biology Interface"
26 June 2008
The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Medical Research Council (MRC) have worked with the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) on the report "Face to Face: UK Chemistry-Biology Interface". All three research councils will work with the community and the RSC to consider how best to take the recommendations forward.
The BBSRC, EPSRC and MRC recognise the importance of research and training activities at the chemistry-biology interface and support work in this area through various routes, with an overall portfolio of £240M across the three councils.
Interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary work is supported by several funding programmes across the research councils, and training activities make a substantial contribution to meeting future skills needs in this area.
Research council funded work at the chemistry-biology interface covers broad areas such as:
- Protein structure and chemistry
- Biological catalysis
- Novel chemical synthesis methods
- The application of engineering principles to biological materials
