BBSRC in line with Government response to European ILUC consultation
15 November 2010
In line with the UK's recent response to the European Commissions' consultation on indirect land use change (ILUC) impacts of biofuels, BBSRC supports research and development into second plus generation bioenergy (rather than first generation or conventional bioenergy). For instance, the research of BBSRC Sustainable Bioenergy Centre (BSBEC) looks at using non-food crops and non-edible plant waste as feedstocks. BSBEC focuses on improving yields and conversion efficiencies for producing biofuels and associated value-adding co-products. BSBEC is also researching the social issues that surround bioenergy as well as undertaking life cycle analysis of various bioenergy systems. By focusing on second plus generation biofuels BBSRC aims to reduce the risks of negative impacts of biofuels while maximising their potential.
More details on BBSRC bioenergy research are published in our Bioenergy Research leaflet (PDF 356KB).
