2012 BBSRC Innovator of the Year finalists announced

The nine shortlisted finalists for the 2012 BBSRC Innovator of the Year competition have been announced. They will be competing to be crowned Innovator of the Year 2012 at an event in London on 28 March 2012 in recognition of their efforts to take their work beyond the lab to deliver social and economic benefits.
Three finalists will compete in each of the three categories of 'Commercial Innovator', 'Social Innovator' and 'Most Promising Innovator' which are aimed at reflecting the breadth of the benefits delivered by BBSRC's investment in UK bioscience. One of the category winners will then be chosen as the overall Innovator of the Year.
Winners in each category will receive a £10,000 award for them to support their research, training or other activities promoting economic or social impact. The overall winner will receive a further £5,000 and their department will receive £15,000.
The finalists will be judged by an expert independent panel. The judges will be looking to recognise those innovators who have worked hardest and have gone furthest to take their science out of the lab to deliver impact.
The finalists are:
- Duncan Graham, University of Strathclyde – Molecular diagnostics for improved healthcare using designer surface chemistry and spectroscopy
- Jim Murray, University of Cardiff – BART: Bioluminescent Assay in Real Time for reporting nucleic acid amplification
- Chris Schofield, University of Oxford – Discovery of 'oxygen sensing enzymes' and their development for the treatment of human diseases
- Russell Foster, University of Oxford – A New Understanding of the Eye
- Mark Hanson, University of Southampton – LifeLab Southampton: Biomedical science engagement to promote health literacy in teenagers
- Richard Mithen, Institute of Food Research – Beneforte broccoli – a consumer product from UK plant research
Most Promising Innovator
- Anthony Hollander, University of Bristol – Stem cell bandage for the repair of torn meniscal cartilage in the knee
- George Lomonossoff, John Innes Centre – A system for the rapid production of vaccines and pharmaceutical proteins in plants
- Polly Roy, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine – Building viruses from scratch: platform technologies to generate unconventional but safe vaccines for animal disease
