Biochemical Society awards for BBSRC chair and funded scientists

The Biochemical Society has announced its 2013 awards winners amongst which are a number of researchers associated with BBSRC. The awards recognise the excellence of the scientists' research and the implications their work has had for the research community and wider society.

Professor Sir Tom Blundell, Chair of BBSRC and Emeritus Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Cambridge has been awarded the Biochemical Society award for 2013 in recognition of his achievements in research.

The Biochemical society also gave medals to Professor Sir Alec Jeffreys of the University of Leicester, Doctor Robin May of the University of Birmingham and Professor Mervyn Bibb of the John Innes Centre, all of whom have been supported with funding from BBSRC.

The researchers received the following awards:

  • Professor Sir Tom Blundell was awarded the Biochemical Society Award
  • Professor Sir Alec Jeffreys was awarded The Colworth Medal
  • Doctor Robin May was awarded The AstraZeneca Award
  • Professor Mervyn Bibb was awarded Heatley Medal and Prize

The winners will receive their medals at the 2013 Biochemistry Society Conference.

Professor Steve Busby, Chairman of the Awards Committee, said, 'The Biochemical Society's Awards will recognise scientists at all career stages, across the whole breadth of the molecular biosciences, and the award lectures in 2013 will showcase the amazing contributions that the winners have made.'

The Biochemical Society promotes the advancement of the molecular biosciences and is the largest discipline-based learned society in the Biosciences.
