BBSRC to sponsor UK teams in global synthetic biology competition

BBSRC to sponsor UK teams in global synthetic biology competition - 14 January 2014. Fuse

BBSRC is co-funding sponsorship of UK entrants to the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) 2014 competition.

BBSRC will sponsor teams from the UK, along with the Society for General Microbiology and the Biochemical Society. Successful teams will receive up to 50% of stipends for 10 students, at a rate of £180 per week for a 10 week period, with the remainder from their host institution.

The iGEM competition is a worldwide synthetic biology contest for students to use a kit of standard biological parts and build systems that work in living cells. It is an exciting opportunity for a new generation of aspiring synthetic biologists to develop their skills and network.

Applications for sponsorship should be completed by February 28 2014, with the results to be announced by March 31 2014. Applicants must include a statement from their host institution guaranteeing the matched funding. Preference will be given to teams containing students from a wide range of disciplines.

Successful teams must submit a report detailing the project undertaken and their ranking at the final judging.

Application forms and more information are available at: www.gla.ac.uk/researchinstitutes/biology/igem.
