BBSRC Impact Report 2011 highlights impacts in food security and innovation

Today (4 January 2012), the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) publishes its Impact Report 2011. The report details BBSRC's ongoing efforts to ensure that BBSRC-funded research in basic biology can be fully exploited to deliver economic and social benefits for the UK.

The report (see related links) picks out a number of major highlights from 2010 - 2011 including research to produce a draft sequence of the wheat genome and the launch of a new variety of Broccoli, called Beneforté, developed with funding from BBSRC.

Access to the wheat genome will support global food security efforts by helping breeders and farmers to increase production sustainably; it also has the potential to increase the competitiveness of UK farming: the wheat harvest is worth around £1.6Bn a year to the UK economy.

British-grown Beneforté broccoli is now available in Marks and Spencer stores around the UK and will become more widely available in other supermarkets during summer 2012.

The report also outlines plans for future investment in order to ensure that BBSRC's research and training continue to deliver significant impact.

All of the research councils publish Impact Reports today. In addition, Research Councils UK (RCUK) is publishing a complementary report (see external links) which details the various activities through which the Research Councils are working together to achieve greater impact.

Minister for Universities and Science David Willetts said: "These reports demonstrate that the UK is a world leader in science and research. From the development of groundbreaking new treatments to studies that shape public policy and improve lives, the significant economic and societal impact of the UK research base is extremely impressive."
