Appendix A8.4

Calculation of annual leave for shift workers

The annual leave allowance for a shift worker is influenced by the average number of shifts worked per week over the shift cycle in the following way.

When determining the annual allowance, first determine the amount in days as follows, referring to the table in appendix A8.1 :

  • If an average of five shifts per week or less are worked over the shift cycle as a whole, use the figure for a 5-day week
  • If more than five shifts on average are worked per week over the shift cycle as a whole, use the figure for a 6-day week

The allowance is then converted to hours using the following formula (fractions of an hour are rounded up):

Weekly conditioned hours X Annual leave allowance (in days) ÷ 5 = Annual leave allowance for a shift worker (in hours)

Annual leave taken will be debited against annual leave allowance as follows:

  • Planned leave written into roster: on the basis of normal conditioned hours, and the balance of scheduled hours for the period should be worked over the remainder of the shift cycle
  • Casual leave (i.e. odd days): on the basis of the hours which could normally have been worked during that period but for the absence, i.e. normal scheduled hours less any overtime written into the rosters. Where overtime is written into rosters separate "normal hours" rosters may be maintained for this purpose
