Computational requirements of the biological sciences review

March 2009

This review was conducted to provide an evidence base to underpin the Council's strategy, including involvement in future national facilities for high performance computing (HPC).

Our Tools and Resources Strategy Panel (renamed in February 2012 as the 'Exploiting New Ways of Working Strategy Advisory Panel') received the review report in spring 2009. The Panel supported the review's findings and agreed to oversee the implementation of the recommendations. In autumn 2009, the review report was considered by our Strategy Advisory Board. The Board recognised that use of the HPC national facility is a niche activity for the bioscience research community and any further BBSRC financial commitments should be adjusted to reflect anticipated future use. Since 2009, BBSRC has taken steps to implement the review recommendations. For example, two calls of the Tools and Resources Development Fund (£2.5M budget for each call) explicitly encouraged applications to develop new HPC software relevant to the biosciences.
