Launched in 1996, BBSRC David Phillips Fellowships support outstanding scientists in the early stage of their research careers. The Fellows are assigned an independent mentor who can provide professional advice and guidance.

Examples of successful impact include:
- Dr Heather Ferguson from the University of Glasgow studies the ecology and evolutionary biology of malaria-carrying mosquitoes in Tanzania and has successfully trained African PhD and MSc students
- At the University of Newcastle, Dr Mark Whittingham’s research into the effects of habitat on farmland birds has been incorporated into Natural England’s agri-environment scheme guidelines to help farmers protect the biodiversity on their farms
- Dr Mark Webber’s work at the University of Birmingham on bacteria and resistance to antibiotics has informed two reports produced by European Union Scientific Advisory Committees
- Dr Andrea Graham’s research at the University of Edinburgh on the mammalian immune system is helping immunologists reduce the number of animals used in experiments
