Vision of the future
Brilliant breakthroughs are being made by scientists trying to understand how the eye works and how we can improve our health by looking after our eyes. Discoveries have been made about the effect of nutrition and ultraviolet light on our eyes, how it regulates our body clock to ensure we remain healthy and how vision affects our sporting ability. These new discoveries are making a difference to the way blind people live and helping researchers tackle diseases such as cancer and the cause of heart attacks.
Throughout this research we have encouraged work that adopts the principles of the 3Rs (Replacement, Refinement and Reduction) in the use of animals and aims to improve animal welfare.
About this resource
This resource provides novel practical ideas that can be carried out in class and instructions on carrying out eye dissections. Designed to inspire students and support teachers there is a teacher's guide with supporting information, quick experiments, extension, literacy and numeracy activities with links to further information.
Hands-on dissections are a valuable and informative activity for students and this resource provides teachers with advice and guidance to enable a deeper investigation of the properties of eye tissues and an understanding of related health issues. The dissection activity progresses through identification of the structure and function of the eye to investigating the effect of ultraviolet light on eye tissues and the protective effects of sunglasses.
Additional activities linked to the curriculum involve investigation of binocular and colour vision, acuity and field of vision.
