Integrative mammalian biology
A £12.3M partnership between:
- BBSRC
- Higher Education Funding Council for England
- Medical Research Council
- Scottish Funding Council
- British Pharmacology Society’s Integrative Pharmacology Fund (donors: AstraZeneca, GlaxoSmithKline and Pfizer)
- Department for Business, Innovation and Skills
This supports 4 major projects to build capacity in integrative mammalian biology in London at Imperial College and King’s College, and through 2 joint consortia between the universities of Manchester and Liverpool, and the universities of Glasgow and Strathclyde.
Integrative mammalian biology is the study of how genes influence body function and is central to development of new therapeutic approaches to human and animal diseases. A recent survey of UK Higher Education Institutes revealed the emergence of a skills gap in mammalian biology thought to be caused by a decline in animal physiology education.
The Capacity Building Awards aim to address this by providing grants that academic centres can use to rebuild their capacity for research training at undergraduate, postgraduate and postdoctoral levels. This will equip the next generation of researchers with the range of expertise and skills required including:
- best practice in the use of animals in research
- high quality experimental design
- the application of a broad range of techniques and approaches in integrative mammalian biology
