Background

Launched to coincide with our 20th anniversary (see related links), the Anniversary Future Leader Fellowship (AFLF) will provide support for researchers wishing to undertake independent research and gain leadership skills. The AFLF will support the transition of early stage researchers to fully independent research leaders. As such AFLFs represent part of our commitment to the supply of highly skilled professional scientists to the UK.

Aimed at

Early career researchers who want to conduct their own independent research within a host laboratory. Applicants will have demonstrated high potential and have no more than five years of postdoctoral research experience. The call is also open to current PhD students who are expected to have completed their PhD viva exam prior to announcement of the awarded AFLFs (30 November 2014).

Research areas

Proposals can be submitted in any area of science within our remit. We particularly encourage applications that are aligned with our overarching strategic priorities (see related links including our strategic priorities).

Nature of award

Awards are for three years and include personal salary as well as support for travel and subsistence, research consumables and training activities. It is expected that around 12 fellowships will be awarded, each at a value of up to £300k. To ensure that fellows receive sufficient support, this threshold has been increased from the initial £250k available. In addition to this funding, it is also expected that a substantial demonstration of support for the fellow be made by the Research Organisation. Applications are welcome from candidates seeking flexible working arrangements (e.g. part-time); see the Fellowships handbook for further information (see in downloads above).

Eligibility

Note: AFLF applicants are not eligible to apply to any additional 2014 BBSRC fellowship competitions.
