BBSRC-SFI memorandum of understanding

Call status: Open
Application deadline: 21 September 2016, 4pm

Funded through our responsive mode grants.

BBSRC and Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) have agreed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to welcome, encourage and support applications that may cut across their national boundaries and involve international collaborative teams, led by researchers from the UK and Republic of Ireland (ROI).

This provides for a 'Lead Agency Agreement' whereby BBSRC will receive and assess collaborative proposals from eligible institutions on behalf of both organisations.

BBSRC-SFI applications

BBSRC will accept joint applications for responsive mode research project grants at any time (see application deadlines in related links).

  • The scope of the partnership will be restricted to research projects, including technology development projects, and will specifically exclude embryonic stem cell research. While industrial collaborations are welcome, the Industrial Partnership Award (IPA) and LINK schemes are not available for this call. The New Investigator scheme will also be excluded
  • Deadlines are the same as for standard responsive mode proposals (see our application deadlines page in related links). The usual guidance for responsive mode applications applies for the UK partners, along with the additional guidance below
  • A single proposal for a collaborative research or technology development project should be submitted to BBSRC via the Je-S with the UK and ROI applicants designated as Principal Investigator and SFI Co-Investigator, respectively. Only the UK applicants and their associated costs should be added to the Je-S form. The ROI applicants do not need a Je-S account as they and their associated costs should only be listed in the SFI application form and budget form, respectively.
  • A separate budget request must be submitted for the ROI component of the research using a template provided by SFI (SFI consolidated budget form, see application downloads below) and in accordance with SFI’s Grant Application Budget Policy. A maximum request of €500,000 direct costs will apply to the ROI budget
  • A signed cover sheet, remit statement, funding history, letter of support from the ROI-based host research body and 2-page budget justification for the ROI-based research component (using the SFI application form, see application downloads below) must also be submitted
  • BBSRC will take the lead role in processing and assessing applications, with appropriate input from SFI. On receipt of the application, BBSRC will forward a copy of the completed application forms to SFI. SFI will verify the eligibility of the application, ensuring that the ROI SFI co-investigator and ROI budget meet the terms of the call and that the application aligns with SFI’s legal remit. A decision on bilateral proposals will be made by the Committee Chairs as per BBSRC's usual process. Proposals approved for funding will be jointly supported by BBSRC and SFI. For each collaborative award granted under the partnership, BBSRC will issue an award agreement (i.e. offer document) to the UK lead investigator’s institution for the UK-based research activity. SFI will issue an award agreement (i.e. letter of offer) to the SFI co-investigator’s host institution for ROI-based research activity

  • The usual eligibility criteria apply for BBSRC applicants
  • To receive support from SFI, the ROI partner(s) must be based at an institution eligible for SFI support. Additionally, the ROI SFI co-investigator must be a member of the academic staff of an eligible Research Body (permanent or with a contract that covers the period of the grant) or a Contract Researcher with a contract that covers the period of the grant, who is recognised by the eligible Research Body as an independent investigator and will have an independent office and research space at the host eligible Research Body for which he/she will be fully responsible for at least the duration of the grant. The SFI co-investigator must also have the capability and authority to mentor and supervise postgraduate students and team members
