We provide strategic funding to 8 institutes. They deliver innovative, world class bioscience research and training, leading to wealth and job creation, generating high returns for the UK economy. They have strong links with business, industry and the wider community, and support policy development.
The institutes' research underpins key sectors of the UK economy such as agriculture, bioenergy, biotechnology, food and drink and pharmaceuticals. In addition, the institutes maintain unique research facilities of national importance.
The Babraham Institute undertakes innovative, world-leading life sciences research to generate new knowledge of the biological mechanisms underpinning ageing, development and the maintenance of health and wellbeing.

The Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS) is a world class research and education centre at Aberystwyth University.

The John Innes Centre is an independent, internationally renowned bioscience research centre in plant science and microbiology. JIC's unique blend of research spans fundamental science through to strategic applications and practical outcomes.
JIC's mission is to advance the scientific understanding of plants and microbes and to apply this knowledge for the benefit of society and the environment through research, knowledge exchange, commercialisation and training.

The Pirbright Institute, formerly the Institute for Animal Health (IAH), is a world-leading centre of excellence for research into infectious diseases of farm animals, to advance the knowledge of veterinary and medical science, and to enhance the sustainability of livestock farming.

The Roslin Institute is a BBSRC institute incorporated with the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, the number one-ranked veterinary school in the UK in the 2008 research assessment exercise.
The institute undertakes research within the framework of BBSRC Institute Strategic Programmes focussed on the health and welfare of animals, and applications of basic animal sciences in human and veterinary medicine, the livestock industry and food security.
